first step ( after modelling and finding a good pose) i usually do is to find the good tones bfore going into details
rythme of colors and tone is the most important thing

This might be a stupid question but, do you paint most of the lighting? I remember from reading the d'Artiste Character Modeling book, you mentioned that you UV project from the camera angle you're using. If that wasn't you then just kidding. Anyways, after seeing these production deviants, the whole "painterly look" (which seems to be hush-hush everywhere) is all making sense now!
